Formed as Unione Sportiva Reggio Calabria in 1914, the club have been renamed on numerous occasions in their history. Based in the southern city of Reggio Calabria, they were officially called Reggina in 1944.

The outfit have spent most of their lifetime in the lower Divisions. They almost lasted a decade in the Second Division in the 60s and 70s until they were again relegated. However, they have been able to achieve moderate success in recent times.

Their promotion to Serie B in 1995 breathed new life into the team and the fans as they reached the top flight for the first time in their history in 1999. They were relegated two years later after losing a play-off, but quickly returned to establish themselves as a Serie A side yet again.

The Amaranto have made unspectacular survival in the top flight their trademark. Yet last term they beat all the odds to stay up despite an 11-point Calciopoli penalty.
