Week 9 - Reports

Albinoleffe 2-3 Pisa
Newly promoted Pisa took advantage of Brescia’s postponed game to beat Albinoleffe 3-2 and go top of Serie B. Gian Piero Ventura’s side thoroughly deserved the win and really took control of the game when Cerci put them 2-1 in front in the 56th minute. Castillo then made it 3-1 against an off-colour Albinoleffe side – even if the home boys did have a shot cleared off the line, Colombo hit the post and Madonna got a consolation goal in injury time.

Ascoli 1-2 Chievo
Chievo collected the three points at Ascoli thanks to an injury time goal which has aided their promotion push. The Verona outfit, who faced Ascoli in Serie A last term, took the lead in minute 37 when Brazilian Luciano finished off a great counter-attack for the visitors. Ascoli got back into the game with a Soncin strike after the break. But just as it seemed a draw was on the cards, Chievo snatched a winner through Bentivoglio.

Brescia 0-3 Mantova (Oct 23)
Mantova ended their crisis in spectacular fashion by demolishing Brescia at the Rigamonti in this rescheduled Week 9 tie. The visitors had just five points from their last six games, but ran riot to end the Rondinelle’s unbeaten record. Although Brescia had the better of the first half, they struggled to make an impact. Instead, Viviano only parried Lucenti’s strike into the path of Caridi for a tap-in. When Lima saw red for dissent, Serse Cosmi’s men fell apart and Lucenti set up Tarana’s counter-attack, while Spinale’s low drive surprised Viviano to seal the scoreline. This result means Pisa are alone on top of the table after 10 rounds.

Frosinone 4-1 Bari
Frosinone are dreaming of a serious Serie A push after netting a comfortable victory over Bari. The early last-man dismissal of Ingrosso complicated matters for the visitors as the home team swept into a 2-0 advantage. But the plucky southerners put up a brave fight and got back into the game just after the break. They continued to attack, but it was no surprise when Dedic grabbed a five-minute brace to seal the points. It looks like it could be another long campaign for Bari…

Grosseto 0-0 Messina
Mid-table strugglers Grosseto and Messina played out the only 0-0 draw of the day in Serie B. Despite both being desperate for points, neither side could break the deadlock. Messina will be content with a point, but they’ll have to soon start stringing together a few wins if they have any play-off hopes for this season.

Lecce 2-2 Spezia
Lecce salvaged a draw with the last attack of the game against Serie B strugglers Spezia. The promotion hopefuls did take the lead in the first half when Zanchetta made no mistake from the penalty spot, but the away side turned things around with a Gorzegno brace – his second coming thanks to an error from Rosati. Spezia had a great chance to make it 3-1 late on with Tulli, but that mistake proved costly as Tiribocchi unleashed an accurate shot past Santoni to make it 2-2.

Modena 1-1 Cesena
A 55th minute Pinardi penalty rescued a point for Modena in a derby that many expected them to win against Cesena. Although the Gialloblu have had a stuttering start to the campaign, struggling Cesena had only collected five points in eight games prior to kick off. Yet the away side took the lead on the half hour mark when Sacilotto rippled the net before the Stadio Braglia outfit levelled from the spot after the break. The home side also ended the encounter with 10-men following the dismissal of Tamburini.

Piacenza 0-1 Bologna
Bologna picked up their third straight win of the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Piacenza. A Mingazzini strike in the second half, with the considerable help of home ‘keeper Cassano, settled the game. Piacenza, who earlier struck the bar with a Patrasu free-kick, threw on star striker Cacia for the last half hour but he couldn’t salvage them a point. Bologna’s promotion campaign, after a slow start to the season, is now well on track.

Ravenna 2-2 Triestina
Triestina were denied three vital away points when a Cosenza strike with just nine minutes left spoilt their Sunday afternoon. The visitors started the game brightly and went in front when Kyriazis headed home a corner, but the lead didn’t last long. Mezzano’s use of his hands in the box saw a penalty awarded and Chianese did the damage from the spot. The second half was full of chances and Granoche rippled the net after he got on the end of a Gorgone cross. But Ravenna got the equaliser when Cosenza rose to beat Rossi from a corner.

Rimini 2-2 Avellino
Struggling Avellino rescued a point late on at Rimini, but the result still leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table. Rimini took the lead after just seven minutes thanks to a Porchia header, but the boys in green – somewhat unexpectedly – levelled things through Pellicori. However, Rimini went back in front thanks to Jeda’s sixth goal of the campaign from the spot, only for the away side to do the same when Kenesei slotted home a penalty in minute 87.

Treviso 1-3 Vicenza
The Veneto derby went to Vicenza – despite playing the last 30 minutes of the game with just 10 men. Although Treviso had the more chances, the away side were clinical in front of goal as Schwoch and Capone put them two up. Cudini was dismissed for a foul on Barreto after the break, but his side still added a third even if there was a hint of offside about Sforzini’s strike. Treviso netted a consolation in minute 76 when Quadrini won a penalty and Barreto slotted it home.
