Roberto Donadoni was the Italian Football Federation’s somewhat risky choice when faced with the task of replacing World Cup winning boss Marcello Lippi.

Born in the province of Bergamo, Donadoni won everything as a player with Milan after leaving Atalanta in 1986. He also appeared for the New York Metrostars and ended his playing days in Saudi Arabia with Al Ittihad Jedda.

The winger also enjoyed a glittering international career, appearing in two World Cups and two European Championships. He scored five goals in his 63 caps.

After retirement, Donadoni was handed the Lecco job in Serie C1 during 2001-02 before moving to Livorno and Genoa in the Second Division. He returned to the Tuscan outfit in 2004 where he kept them in Serie A before quitting in 2005-06 after a row with fiery President Aldo Spinelli.

Donadoni friendlies: 16/8/06 Italy 0-2 Croatia; 15/11/06 Italy 1-1 Turkey; 22/8/07 Hungary 3-1 Italy; 17/10/07 Italy 2-0 South Africa; 6/2/08 Italy 3-1 Portugal; 26/3/08 Spain 1-0 Italy;
