Amauri has angered Italy boss Marcello Lippi by admitting his number one choice is Brazil.
In his first Press conference when taking over the job, Lippi made it very clear he would not stand for players who considered the Azzurri a fall-back position. “Italy are second choice for no-one.”
Juventus striker Amauri is in the process of attaining Italian citizenship and tried to remain neutral on the issue, but slipped up during an interview in London.
“I want to play for the team of my country, Brazil, and that has been my dream since I was a child,” confessed Amauri.
“My idol is Romario, as I grew up with the San Paolo shirt in my heart. It would be an honour to wear the green and gold of Brazil.”
Selecao boss Carlos Dunga has said that Amauri is in his thoughts, but quite low down the pecking order.
“I admire Dunga, he was a great player and now it is up to him to decide. Italy? First of all I need a passport and that won’t arrive for at least three months.
“If the call from Brazil does not come, then it will be an honour to wear the Azzurri jersey.”
