Mazzarri upbeat in defeat
Monday 11 August, 2008

Sampdoria boss Walter Mazzarri seems unfazed by the Blucerchiati’s defeat against Sporting Lisbon yesterday.

Doria were undone by the Portuguese outfit and had to play much of the game with 10 men after the dismissal of Hugo Campagnaro.

But Mazzarri isn’t overly concerned by his side’s loss as he believes valuable lessons were learned.

“The result doesn’t matter in friendlies,” the ex-Reggina tactician stressed.

“Furthermore we conceded one goal due to a goalkeeping error and another from a penalty that didn’t exist.

“I’m not worried because last year we lost 1-0 to Newcastle at this stage – you just have to continue on your road.

“We are a young group and we have to learn from tough games like this. Now we know what to expect this season, particularly in Europe.

“Let’s not forget that we didn’t give in even when we went down to 10 men against a strong European side like Sporting. We should take confidence from that.”
