It was like a foreign country for...
Sergio Zarate (Ancona 1992-93)
This past Christmas a young Ancona fan eagerly opened up a massive present placed under his tree. It promised to be exciting, worth the wait and something that would be unforgettable. By the time the wrapping had been taken off, he wished he’d never set eyes on it. It’s a story that all Ancona fans can relate to.

In 1992, after promotion to Serie A, the club decided to give their followers a new winger in the form of Sergio Fabian Zarate. In all honesty they shouldn’t have bothered. Zarate was dreadful. Someone once stated that if football was played without the ball Zarate would have been the best player in the world. How truthful that statement turned out to be. His Ancona stint lasted all of 11 games and even if he did score twice Zarate’s mediocrity shone through like no other.

Add to that his hair – odd how many appalling haircuts are groomed by appalling players – and you get the real gist of his incompetence. Ancona did manage to sell him back to Nuremberg – the club they signed him from – but needless to say Italy was like a foreign country for Sergio Fabian Zarate.
