Whatever Happened To…

November 2000

Born: Montevideo (Uruguay), 25/4/66

Inter and stranieri have had an uneasy coexistence over the past decade. For every shining success like Paul Ince and Alvaro Recoba there has been a flop ala Sebastien Rambert or Igor Shalimov. One foreign player who graced the Nerazzurri shirt was Uruguayan star Ruben Sosa.

The nippy forward noted for his long range shooting and ability from a dead ball moved to Italy in 1988 when he switched to Lazio from Real Zaragoza. He spent four seasons in a developing Lazio side before joining the Milan giants.

Sosa was the shining light in an otherwise disappointing few seasons for Inter, stealing the spotlight from big signings like Dennis Bergkamp and Darko Pancev. In his first campaign, they recovered after a terrible start and inspired by Sosa’s 20 goals finished runners-up to Milan.

The following season was a disaster for Inter, finishing in the bottom half although they won the UEFA Cup with Sosa netting 16 in Serie A. With the arrival of a new revolution under Massimo Moratti and falling out of favour with Coach Ottavio Bianchi, Sosa lost his place in his third season before being shipped out to Borussia Dortmund where he struggled with injuries before a move to minor Spanish side Logrones.

Knee problems blighted his European career but he has enjoyed a renaissance back in his home country at Nacional where he sports the No 10 jersey and only last season won the domestic cup. He sill occasionally features for his country, having won the Copa America in 1995.
