It was like a foreign country for...
Darko Pancev (Inter 1992-93)
He arrived as one of Europe’s most deadly strikers. He certainly didn’t leave with the same reputation. After finishing as Yugoslavia’s top scorer for three consecutive seasons between 1989 and 1992, Darko Pancev was rightly considered as one of Europe’s finest.

How quickly one season at Inter can change all that. Having been part of the successful Red Star Belgrade side that lifted the 1991 European Champions’ Cup, he was snapped up by the Nerazzurri.

Pancev will always be remembered as one of the most incompetent players Serie A has ever seen. His one season at Inter in 1992-93 saw him collect just one goal in 12 League games. This after he hit 84 goals in three seasons in Belgrade. As Inter fans remember he was more likely to hit the curva’s at the San Siro or the corner flag then he was the net.

His poor finishing continued, in Germany he netted just four times in two seasons before virtually disappearing off the face of the earth. In the end his haircut seemed to have more finesse than his finishing ability. Needless to say Italy was like a foreign country to him.
