Ferguson slams referee
Wednesday 9 April, 2008

Sir Alex Ferguson did not feel Manchester United were let off by the penalty miss, as he insisted it was “a bad decision.”

Roma needed to overturn a 2-0 first leg deficit at Old Trafford and could have taken the lead 30 minutes in when Wes Brown brought down Amantino Mancini, but Daniele De Rossi ballooned the spot-kick over the bar.

"It was a bad decision. Wes Brown got the ball, no doubt,” maintained the Man Utd manager.

"We are just pleased to be through. We had to play well, but it was a European quarter-final against the team lying second in Italy and you expect them to play a bit.”

Ferguson took a risk before kick-off by leaving Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, but Carlos Tevez proved to be the match-winner late on.

This was United’s 11th consecutive Champions League home victory – a new record for the tournament – and they are unbeaten at Old Trafford in Europe for three years.

"Our home record has been very good and is something to be proud of and it will have to remain so because European football is difficult."

Manchester United will face Barcelona in the semi-final.
