Massimo Ambrosini admits Milan’s stars “could have done better and the injuries must not be an alibi.”
The Rossoneri have stuttered throughout the campaign and went out of both the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia.
“We should have learned from the lessons of the past, but now is not the time to look back,” the midfielder told Milan Channel.
“We are aware of the mistakes we made and must now reach our final objective which is also the most important qualification for the Champions League.”
In recent times Milan used their focus on Europe as the reason for their lack of competitiveness in the Scudetto race, but once again they failed to trouble Inter and Juventus.
“In past years this team has always had wonderful moments in that competition. It’s true that perhaps we could have done better in Serie A in previous seasons, too,” mused Ambrosini.
“We have had to deal with numerous injuries to important players and those affected us, even if we will not use them as an alibi.
“It is curious that so many Italian sides have been plagued by injuries, such as Juventus, Inter and Roma. The Giallorossi had to play a Champions League decider with Arsenal in absurd conditions.
“It is certainly disappointing, because traumatising injuries to the knee can happen, but they are part of the sport like bad luck and a few setbacks.”
Milan welcome Lecce on Sunday evening with a 20.00 UK time kick-off. All the Serie A games have been postponed to Sunday so that players could return from international duty overseas.
Kaka, Ronaldinho, Alexandre Pato and Thiago Silva missed today’s training session at Milanello after their flight from Brazil was delayed.
