Lippi refrains from Spain
Wednesday 30 April, 2008

World Cup winning Coach Marcello Lippi has poured cold water on rumours linking him with Spain’s national side.

The wily tactician has been enjoying a Sabbatical since leading Italy to glory in the summer of 2006, but has indicated that he is keen to return to the bench.

Despite regular whispers linking him with high-profile jobs, Lippi has remained unemployed and has shrugged off recent links to Spain.

“I haven’t been offered any jobs at the highest level,” he claimed in GQ.

“Me as Spain Coach? They are a side of perennial underachievers and it would be a fascinating challenge.

“However, when you have won the World Cup with your national team and brought tears of joy to your compatriots and been welcomed back home by millions, you can’t work for another country.”

Lippi is widely tipped for a return to the Azzurri bench should Roberto Donadoni fail to deliver at Euro 2008.
