Ex-Real chief Sanz in Bari bid
Saturday 26 April, 2008

After his failed bid to buy out Parma, it is now reported former Real Madrid patron Lorenzo Sanz is tabling an offer for Bari.

The Spanish businessman had already hit the headlines last year when he reached an agreement to buy out the Tardini outfit, but the deal collapsed at the last minute.

He’s going to try again in the Italian market, this time in the south with Serie B mid-table side Bari.

“Effectively I am considering this. I would like to be clear that for the moment it is just an idea, but obviously I am looking into it in some depth,” Sanz told the Corriere del Mezzogiorno newspaper.

“At the moment there has been no official contact with the club, but an emissary we trust is trying to get as much information as possible.

“Let’s just say very soon we could have a better view of the club’s economic situation. Only then will we contact the club.”

Bari were last in Serie A back in 2000-01 and have had many financial problems, with the fans going on strike until the Matarrese family agreed to sell their shares to new investors.

“In sporting terms, Bari are a very important arena,” insisted Sanz. “The club has great tradition and 100 years of history. I have often heard them spoken of and the San Nicola is one of the biggest and best stadiums in Europe.

“Let us not forget that it is one of the most important and densely populated cities in the south of Italy. There is everything needed to make this a winning project.”
