Allegri sets sights on Roma
Sunday 26 April, 2009

Cagliari Coach Massimiliano Allegri admits his side “can catch Roma,” but Sampdoria's Walter Mazzarri is kicking himself.

The Sardinians were only minutes away from snatching a shock 3-2 victory at Marassi after trailing 2-0 when Antonio Cassano volleyed in the equaliser.

The result still puts Cagliari in seventh place, only three points behind crisis-hit Roma.

“We believe in our chances,” smiled Allegri. “Now there are two tough games against Palermo and Roma, who can catch. The important thing is to play with a target clearly in sight.

“We started the second half the same way as the first, then as soon as Sampdoria took the lead we lost our way.

“After we managed to keep it tight, we found ourselves again and took advantage of the fact we had fresher legs than our opponents.”

The Blucerchiati were struggling after their midweek Coppa Italia semi-final qualification against Inter, but threw away a 2-0 lead.

“I am happy with the overall performance of my side and it was a very entertaining encounter, but I am angry we paid such a heavy price for some silly mistakes,” noted Samp boss Mazzarri.

“We were too sluggish and made several errors. It would've been too much of a shock to lose a game we could so easily have won.

“I am bitter about the result despite the performance. I was going to substitute Cassano after an hour, but he wanted to play on.”
