Duo reject Super League
Thursday 24 April, 2008

Enrico Preziosi and Maurizio Zamparini have rejected Silvio Berlusconi's plan to create an Italian Super League.

The Rossoneri President and Italian Prime Minister claimed he would like to see a championship with only the best teams involved, without promotions and relegations.

“There is no way this proposal should go ahead,” claimed the Genoa patron. “I don't understand how this Super League would be created.

“We are talking about something which needs to be organised for the long term, at least from five to eight years.”

Palermo President Zamparini [pictured] has indicated that this is an old idea which is never going to work.

“I have always disagreed with it and I don't want to have a G-14 in Italian football,” he stated, referring to the now disbanded group of powerful European clubs.

“With this system you can do whatever you want - we could even have 14 dictators ruling Europe rather than 14 democracies.

“This proposal will never be taken into account because, fortunately, we do not live in the United States.”

The G-14 was a European organisation founded in 2000 which aimed to reinforce the power of the most important clubs.

Inter, Juventus and Milan were all members before the group was disbanded at the beginning of 2008.
