Cairo lines up tifosi bonus
Wednesday 22 April, 2009

Torino President Urbano Cairo says he could give a bonus for staying in Serie A to the fans rather than the players.

The Granata are fourth from bottom with just 27 points - one clear of the relegation zone - and six rounds to go.

“The San Siro defeat was an ugly moment,” said Cairo after Sunday's 5-1 thrashing at Milan.

“Now we must put that behind us and focus on the upcoming match with Siena. We need to learn from our mistakes and look ahead, because crying over spilt milk helps nobody.

“There are six Finals coming up and we have got to remain united.”

There were reports that the President had organised bonuses for the players if they avoid the drop, but Cairo had another intriguing idea.

“I should give the bonus to the fans, perhaps in the form of a discount on their season ticket. They are unique and utterly special.

“It is not a cliché when I say they are our 12th man on the field and give the team a great hand by supporting us throughout.

“This is one of the reasons why I wanted Sunday's tickets to be the same special low price that we had against Catania.”

Torino went on to win that match 2-1, but they are still in the thick of the relegation dogfight.

“We are in a situation that nobody wanted, but we cannot dwell on the negatives. We must take inspiration from Il Grande Torino.”
