Adriano Galliani laughed off Milan’s Scudetto chances as “impossible” and explained why they fought to keep David Beckham.
The Rossoneri have caught Juventus in second place and both are now 10 points adrift of Serie A leaders Inter, leading some very hopeful fans to urge a late title push.
“If Milan were to pick up 18 points from the remaining six games, then Inter would in any case get more than eight,” mused the Vice-President.
“Even if [Napoli Coach Roberto] Donadoni did us a favour this weekend, it wouldn’t change anything. First of all because Milan need to focus on their own results and secondly as the gap would still be seven points, a huge chasm.
“There’s no point talking about things that are simply impossible. We have no regrets. We remain convinced that without injuries this squad would have fought for the Scudetto, but this is the way it panned out and so we must try to end the season on a high.”
Beckham provided two assists for Pippo Inzaghi in the 5-1 win over Torino and Galliani is very glad he opted to remain at San Siro beyond the original March 9 deadline.
“The deal with LA Galaxy is very clear. We got what we wanted and that is to have David with us until the end of the season.
“Beckham was a very important buy, positively crucial, and we kept him knowing that [Gennaro] Gattuso was out for the campaign.”
The England international can buy himself out of his contract in November and is then expected to join Milan on a free transfer, although Tottenham are reportedly showing an interest too.
“We hope Beckham will return to us, but all we can say for certain is that until the January transfer window he will be in Los Angeles.”
Emerson left Milan yesterday evening when it was announced he had terminated his contract by mutual consent to deal with a personal matter.
“We parted on excellent terms,” assured Galliani.
