Rossi's Azzurri dream
Tuesday 22 April, 2008

Villarreal starlet Giuseppe Rossi is dreaming of representing Italy, but doesn't mind if it is at the Olympics or Euro 2008.

The 21-year-old former Parma striker, who has scored 11 goals in 19 starts this season, has made his international intentions clear after starring for the Spanish club and the Azzurrini.

“My dream doesn't change, even if I know the odds of me going to China are decisively better,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

When asked about the possibility of teaming up with international veterans like Alessandro Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi in Beijing, Rossi couldn't hide his enthusiasm.

“We'd win gold, for sure. It's not up to me to say who will make the Olympic squad, but whoever comes along will help a lot,” said the American-born forward.

The New Jersey native tempered his confidence when confronted with Italy's group, which includes Honduras, Cameroon and South Korea.

“On paper it seems easy, but if you think about it, it's not. Honduras and Cameroon produced David Suazo and Samuel Eto'o... the Africans won the gold medal in 1996.”

Rossi, a Milan fan, also had something to say about the Rossoneri's chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League and the potential arrival of Ronaldinho.

“It'll be tough to make fourth place. Fiorentina never give up easily and Sampdoria are dangerous. I'd buy Ronaldinho, he is a champion.”

The Azzurrino had more words of advice, this time for his old club Manchester United who face Spanish giants Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday.

“Villarreal beat Barca twice. United haven't called me. Perhaps, they know I wouldn't reveal our secrets.

“I still hear from some of the guys I played with at youth-level, but not that many from the first team. Nevertheless, I will support Manchester,” he concluded.
