Ranieri backs Cannavaro move
Tuesday 21 April, 2009

Juventus Coach Claudio Ranieri is in favour of bringing in Azzurri stopper Fabio Cannavaro.

The 35-year-old is in talks with his former club over a possible return, but some fans have objected to the move as they feel Cannavaro betrayed them when he left after the Calciopoli scandal.

Napoli President Aurelio De Laurentiis rejected a possible swoop due to Fabio's age, but Juve boss Ranieri is more positive.

“We also asked questions about Cannavaro's age, but we couldn't let this chance escape,” he explained.

“We would be able to rebuild the partnership with Giorgio Chiellini and we can sign him for free. When I was consulted about this I gave the go-ahead.”

Juventus will have to play against Lecce behind closed doors on May 3 due to racist chants aimed at Mario Balotelli during the Derby d'Italia.

“Our legal team are weighing things up but the ban is unjust,” Ranieri said.

“It hasn't been a regular problem, we are talking about one game. It is unacceptable behaviour, which Italy can't seem to shake off.

“I am close to Balotelli and I am very saddened by what happened, but I reiterate that it is right to appeal.”
