Francesco Totti admits he is “worried” after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament, but surgery is still up in the air.
“I felt a crack. I’m a bit worried,” said the Roma captain as he left the Villa Stuart clinic in Rome.
He was stretchered off during the Giallorossi’s 1-1 draw with Livorno, a result that effectively ends their Scudetto hopes.
“What do I think about the result? I don’t know. Frankly I’m more worried about my leg right now.”
Roma chief medic Mario Brozzi spoke to television cameras about the extent of Totti’s injury and why he carried on playing despite feeling a twinge earlier in the game.
“Francesco sustained this trauma to the knee and I looked at it the first time, but it was just a bruise and he chose to play on,” explained Brozzi.
“After a few minutes he hurt himself when kicking the ball and so we decided to immediately take him off.
“The tests show a lesion to the anterior cruciate ligament. Tomorrow we will decide on the strategy, but his season is over.”
This means surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee is not necessarily going to happen.
They could wait to see if a less invasive therapy is possible, as surgery would mean sitting out for between four and six months.
