Rizzoli shown the red card
Tuesday 15 April, 2008

Referee Nicola Rizzoli is facing a suspension after failing to dismiss Roma captain Francesco Totti last weekend.

Totti reacted angrily when Rizzoli inadvertently blocked a shooting opportunity while the Giallorossi were trailing Udinese 1-0.

Er Pupone repeatedly insulted the official, but was only shown a yellow card and received a fine of £8,000 rather than a ban.

Rizzoli’s lenient attitude has cost him dearly as he faces a spell out of the game for failing to produce the red.

“My opinion is the same as it was on Sunday,” Roma boss Luciano Spalletti commented in La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The referee felt guilty and took a sympathetic view to Totti’s reaction. It was a strange episode due to the situation and Rizzoli took that into consideration.

“It’s a shame because Nicola had a good game and I would be disappointed if they choose to suspend him.”
