Cagni confirms Empoli quit date
Sunday 13 April, 2008

Gigi Cagni has only just returned to the Empoli bench, but announced he will leave at the end of the season whatever the outcome.

The Coach was sacked earlier this term and replaced by Alberto Malesani, but returned to the position a fortnight ago.

“I am certain I will not be staying on next year,” he told journalists after today’s 1-1 draw with Parma.

“When I returned I spoke to the club and we decided our rapport would last until the end of the season, then we will each go our separate ways.”

The team’s fate hangs in the balance going into the final five rounds, as Empoli are level with Reggina in penultimate place.

“Results are always valuable, especially at this stage of the campaign. We must continue working to improve areas of our play that are not up to scratch, but I have only been here for two weeks and am convinced next Sunday we’ll see a different performance.

“The fight to stay in Serie A will depend a great deal on what the other clubs do. If one of them gives in, then the threshold needed to achieve safety gets lower, otherwise it becomes an even tougher battle.”

Cagni drew criticism from the media and fans during his tenure for keeping Sebastian Giovinco on the bench, but the talented teen started today and scored a wonderful individual goal.

Giovinco is still owned by Juventus and has said he is eager to return to Turin as soon as possible.

“Giovinco is an intelligent lad and knows what he has to do if he wants to improve.”
