VENUE PROFILE

Johannesburg (Wanderers)

 Johannesburg (Wanderers)

The Wanderers is the third ground in Johannesburg to have been used for Test cricket, after Ellis Park and the Old Wanderers. It first hosted a Test in December 1956 having superseded the Old Wanderers, which is now the site of the local railway station.

Two months later Hugh Tayfield took 9-113 against England, still the best figures ever recorded by a South African in Test cricket.

It is also the ground on which Mike Atherton made his memorable 185 not out in December 1995, and where England found themselves 2-4 in the 1st Test in 1999-2000.

The stadium was formerly used for rugby, but is now solely a cricket venue. Often referred to as the "bull ring" due to the imposing stands that can be seen around the ground.

It is home to Gauteng, and has a capacity in excess of 25,000. Johannesburg is a notoriously explosive place, and the hostile atmosphere at the Wanderers reflects this.

The 2003 World Cup Final will be staged at The Wanderers on Sunday March 23.
