The first Test match at the home of Lancashire cricket took place in 1884 and it has been a favourite venue for England ever since. The ground is within walking distance of the home of
Manchester United football club and the roar on match day can easily be heard inside the quaint old cricket ground.
It holds 20,000 spectators and has one of the best car parks at an
English cricket ground. The old pavilion has a certain charm even though the ground is beginning to look faded and cracked in certain areas. The ground was severely damaged in World
War II, when it was commandeered by the army, but was restored in the 1950s and still has that post-war feel today.
Jim Laker famously took 19 wickets here against Australia in 1956 and
eight years later Bobby Simpson stuck 311.
