First staged a Test match in 1983 when India lost to the West Indies, having been built in just nine months.

The second Test at this ground saw Sunil Gavaskar become the first man to pass 10,000 runs in Test cricket. It was also on this ground that Kapil Dev set a (then) world record by taking his 432nd Test wicket.
