Week 4 Preview - 2 Jun, Old Trafford
Race issues to go under the microscope |
Political posturing is all the rage in light of the imminent general election but this Saturday's Cricket Roadshow - broadcast from Old Trafford before the start of play in the 2nd Test - will go where others fear to tread and address the current "race issue" within the sport.
Indian-born Nasser Hussain this week encouraged British Asians to get behind the England team during the current two-Test series with Pakistan but reaction has been mixed.
Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan described Hussain's initiative as unrealistic but others have encouraged him for tackling a difficult issue head-on. What do you think?
Should British residents necessarily get behind their country on the sporting field or is it naïve to expect family history, culture and ancestry to be ignored?
Put another way, would British exiles living down under necessarily side with their newly adopted country or hang on to their roots when, for instance, England played Australia in the World Cup?
Roving reporter Adam Darke canvasses views and looks at the wider picture of race within cricket and how it has, will or is failing to come to terms with it.
What do you think about the subject and have you had first-hand experience of racism within the sport? The Roadshow would like to hear your views and opinions. [Email the roadshow]
Elsewhere on the show Sybil Ruscoe meets up with the Aussies as they stop off in Gallipoli en route to England for the forthcoming Ashes series. Steve Waugh and the gang made a detour to the Turkish coast out of respect for their forefathers who fought there during WW I and Sybil gives us a fascinating insight into the emotional visit.
Not satisfied with that she also takes on the tourists' snarling quickie Glenn McGrath at The Oval as Virtual Cricket gets its first televised airing.
Other features include; a look at the burgeoning friendship between Pakistan-born Usman Afzaal, currently on the fringes of the England Test squad, and Shoaib Akhtar; an interview with Manchester United's Neville brothers; the usual round-up of news from around the county circuit and the weekly Masterclass section.
Two viewers will also have the chance to win a bat signed by the England, Pakistan and Australian one-day sides, and a further winner will receive a pair of tickets for the one-day international between England and Australia on June 10th at Bristol - courtesy of the one-day sponsors Nat West.
This week's competition question is:
Which current Pakistan player captained Lancashire in 1998?
Was it:
(a) Waqar Younis
(b) Wasim Akram
(c) Shoaib Akhtar
