They can't bowl or bat and they spend the day forever running around waiting on the requests of the main team. They are of course, cricket's 12th men, and on Saturday's Cricket Roadshow we investigate exactly what their daily duties entail.
Lackey or lucky, it depends on your perspective, but for some it can be the highlight of their playing careers while for others it represents the ultimate chore as roving reporter Adam Darke discovers.
Elsewhere on the morning programme, broadcast live from Headingley, the Roadshow explains why players have been trying to hit the bottle this year (courtesy of Scrumpy Jack's innovative sponsorship scheme), Analyst Simon Hughes investigates batting reaction times and Mark Butcher relives his match-winning 173no against Australia last year.
The Scrumpy Jack promotion is currently being featured at all first-class grounds and encourages players to hit their advertising hoardings by tempting them with £10,000 prizes to be donated to charities of their choice.
Not many have managed it so far this year but Surrey's Butcher hit the bulls-eye earlier in the season and on Saturday we find out who the lucky beneficiaries were.
The reaction times feature draws on a scientific study conducted at Sheffield University with Hughes extemporizing about how much is instinct and how much pre-meditated when a batsman faces up to bowling of 90mph+.
Also on the show there will be the usual mix of news and reviews, with a comprehensive round-up of all cricket played this week, including the latest from the 3rd npower Test between England and India at Headingley.
