CRICKET ROADSHOWS

Chris Read

Week 13 Preview - 4 Aug, Trent Bridge

Roadshow goes in search of forgotten men

Saturday's Cricket Roadshow explores the strange mystery of Nottinghamshire's missing men when it goes in search of two former Test players once tipped for international stardom.

The vanishing duo still harbour dreams of an England recall but Chris Read and Jason Gallian – for it is they – have slipped so far down the pecking order that their best chance of a comeback lies in an unlikely string of injuries.

On second thoughts, and bearing in mind England's current crock list, both could be called up before the summer's out.

Read would appear to have the greater prospects with Alec Stewart nearing the end of his career but the diminutive keeper has failed to regain the impetus that saw him capped three times against New Zealand in 1999.

Young thruster Jamie Foster – of Durham University, Essex and England A – appears to have stolen the initiative in the race to replace Stewart but with forthcoming tours to both New Zealand and India coming up over the winter the Roadshow examines who else is in the running for international honours.

The case of Jason Gallian is altogether more baffling with the Notts skipper – currently injured – consigned to the international wilderness for six years since the last of his three Test caps.

The 30-year-old opening batsman is currently on the comeback trail after missing the entire season to date with a serious knee injury, but his ambitions were once far higher than recapturing his county berth.

Indeed, he was once singled out for cricketing stardom in the country of his birth – Australia – before opting for the three lions by way of qualification through his English-born parents.

But, having graduated from the Australian Cricket Academy with the likes of Michael Slater, Shane Warne, Greg Blewett and Adam Gilchrist, it appears the transfer of national allegiance dulled his cricketing prowess to the extent that his three Test caps to date have yielded just 74 runs.

Other features on Saturday's show include a helicopter trip with Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee, a review of all the week's cricket and a mid-match assessment of the 3rd Test at Trent.
