Michael Vaughan should be fit to face India in Wednesday's crunch game in Durban after coming through scans on his injured calf.
He strained the injury while batting during Saturday's day/night win against Pakistan, and wasn't able to field in the match.
The initial prognosis for the India game was gloomy, but after undergoing ultrasound and MRI scans at a Durban hospital on Monday there was better news for coach Duncan Fletcher.
"Vaughan will continue to receive intensive treatment over the next 48 hours," said an England spokesman.
"He will practice tomorrow afternoon with the rest of the squad and the England team's medical staff are hopeful that he will be fit for Wednesday's day/night match against India."
Vaughan is England's leading run scorer in the competition with 117 at an average of 39.00.
