England overcame defeat in the opening Test at Sydney to record a comprehensive 4-1 victory, thanks largely to the efforts of Sydney Barnes, Frank Foster and Jack Hobbs.
Barnes, aged 38, returned to England with a record series haul of 34 wickets (at 22.88), while Foster (32 wickets at 21.62 and 226 runs at 32.29) and Hobbs (662 runs at 82.75) both flourished as England regained the Ashes.
Victor Trumper's sixth Test hundred against England and 12 wickets from googly bowler Dr Ranji Hordern set the home team up for their initial win at Sydney, but once Barnes had let rip at Melbourne it was a fairly one-sided affair thereafter.
His opening spell of 5-6 gave England an immediate advantage, and the tourists strengthened their position further courtesy of a mature 114 by 20-year-old Jack Hearne.
Frank Foster's 6-91 then kept Australia below 300 second time around and allowed Hobbs' 126* to steer England to a comfortable eight-wicket victory.
It was much the same in the 3rd Test with Foster (5-36), Hobbs (187) and Barnes (5-105) taking the individual honours in a seven-wicket win.
The recurring theme continued unabated at Melbourne in the 4th Test with Barnes (5-74) helping shoot out the home side for 191 before Wilf Rhodes (179) and Hobbs (178) put on a record 323 for England's 1st wicket.
The Australians were then bowled out for 173 with captain Johnny Douglas (5-46) concluding the rout.
