In a replay of the 1897-8 series Australia came from 0-1 down to win the rubber 4-1 as England struggled to contain their hosts' batting.

The tourists' captain Archie MacLaren gave England the perfect start with 116 as they won by an innings and 124 runs at Sydney, but it was all downhill from there as his team lost the following four Tests.

Sydney Barnes, who claimed 5-65 on his debut at Sydney, followed up with 13-102 in the 2nd Test, but England still went down by 229 runs as Monty Noble (7-17 and 6-60), Reggie Duff (104) and Clem Hill (99) starred for Australia.

The home side triumphed again in the 3rd Test at Adelaide by four wickets, but the match is probably best remembered for Hill's double near-miss - he scored 98 and 97 - which came hot the heels of his 99 at Melbourne.

Australia's dominance continued in the 4th Test at Sydney as Monty Noble (5-54) and Jack Saunders (5-43) bowled England out for 99 in their 2nd innings and set up a seven-wicket victory, and it was much the same in the final match of the series at Melbourne.

England were set just 211 to win after a low-scoring encounter, but Noble completed the 4-1 trouncing by claiming 6-98 as they fell 32 runs short - the same number of wickets as he took in the series.
