Q: Can you use a substitute?

A: Yes you can but a substitute player is not allowed to bat or bowl.

Commonly they are used in two situations: (a) to allow a player to leave the field for a short break or (b) if a player is injured.

A player who picks up an injury during the match - rather than carrying one into the game - is additionally allowed a 'runner' when batting. This enables the injured player to bat while his 'runner' does all the leg work.

But the umpires and opposing captain must be satisfied the injury has occured during and not before the match, otherwise they can rule against a 'runner' being used.
