Q: What is a yorker and why is it so called?
A: A yorker is a fast ball pitching close to, or level with, the batsman's feet, aimed to go under the bat. It derives from an old phrase 'to york' or 'put yorkshire on' someone, which was common parlance for hoodwinking or deceiving them.
