Q: What does the 4th umpire do during a Test match?

Roy Palmer, 4th umpire at Trent Bridge for the England v Australia Test, gave the following description of his role during one of the numerous rain intervals.

"My job is to take the new balls to the fielding side to choose the first ball and the second ball, and then I watch after them. Then, when the other side are in the field I take the balls up to them. We help with all calculations and also telling the captains what time we're due to start and how many overs are left, things like that. It's just nice to have four umpires out here sometimes," said Palmer.
