A: 'On a pair' refers to a player who was out without scoring - known as a duck - in the first innings of a match and is yet to get off the mark in the second innings.
Hence, if he is subsequently dismissed twice in the match without scoring he has the unfortunate accolade of getting 'a pair'.
If the poor soul is dismissed by the first ball he receives in both innings it is known as getting 'a king pair'.
