A: Each player earns points for his performances in Test matches, and these are reflected in the rankings within 24 hours.
Particular "weighting" is given to achievements within the last year, and bonus points are awarded relative to the contribution a player makes to his team. For example, a batsman scoring 75 out of a total of 150 will get a higher bonus than a player who makes 120 when his side's total is 460, and so on.
Points are scored as follows:
Batting
0.5 point per run scored
+10 if score is 50-99
+25 if score is 100 or more
Extra points are awarded, based on the contribution a player makes to his team in any given innings.
Bonus = % of runs scored by an individual in an innings. i.e. if a batsman scores 50 out of a total of 250, then he receives a 20 points bonus (50 is 20% of 250).
Deducted points
-5 for being dismissed having scored between 1 and 9
-10 for being dismissed for 0
The following scorecard entries count as not out, and incur no penalty:
Absent hurt
Absent ill
Not out
Retired hurt
Retired (not out)
Bowling
Points scored are as follows:
15 per wicket taken
+25 if 5 or more wickets taken in an innings
Extra points are awarded, based on the contribution a player makes to his team in any given innings.
Bonus = % of wickets taken by bowler out of total wickets taken by all bowlers, multiplied by 20. i.e. If a bowler takes 4 wickets and eight are taken in total in the innings then he gets 4/8 = 0.5 x 20, or 10 bonus points.
Notes: This bonus only applies if five or more wickets fall in an innings, and only wickets that are credited to bowlers are counted (this excludes, for example, run outs).
Deducted points
(1/4 of runs conceded)
-10 for bowling in an innings but failing to take a wicket
Missed match penalties (applies to both batsmen and bowlers)
All players who miss a Test match which their country plays, for whatever reason(retirement, being dropped, suspension etc) lose 5 points for the first game, 10 for the second, 15 for the third and so on.
Weighting
All points scored by both batsmen and bowlers are weighted to reflect more recent performances. Thus points scored in the last year count for full value as described above, for the last year by one count for 50%, for year two back count for 25% etc on a halved basis per year.
They are updated daily (0200 GMT) and give the most up-to-date system of measuring every Test players' performance that is currently available.
