Q: When a batsman has retired hurt when can he resume his innings?

A: The injured batsman can return to the fray at the fall of any subsequent wicket in the same innings. If his injury restricts his mobility he can return with a "runner", who will run (in full batting gear) to the side of the wicket.

A "runner" can be any member of the same team, but preferably one who has already batted.

'Poppadom fingers'

In the recent Edgbaston Test Nasser Hussain (left) was forced to retire hurt after a Jason Gillespie delivery broke the little finger of his left hand - his fourth break in two years, hence the 'poppadom fingers' nickname.
Because the injury was so serious he did not bat again in the match.
