Q: Why do some bowlers have holes in the end of their boots?

A: It has become a modern trend for bowlers to cut out holes to prevent their big toes being jammed against the ends of their boots. This can prove a painful injury when repeated thousands of times during a season and by cutting a hole in the landing boot (the left foot for right-arm bowlers and vice-versa for left-arm bowlers) serious damage to the toe nail can be avoided.

Former England all-rounder Derek Pringle is widely credited as being the first to do this, with Andy Caddick (left) following suit in the present England side.
