Q: Why does Steve Waugh play with a plain bat?

A: Although Steve Waugh is widely considered one of the best batsmen in the world he does not have a bat sponsor at the moment due to a dispute with Gunn & Moore, hence the blank blade when taking applause for his century at Edgbaston (left). He is no doubt in the process of negotiations but will retain his current status until that has been finalised.

When the deal is done his bat will bear the name of whoever has agreed to pay him, with the only stipulation being that it must be a bona-fide bat-making firm.

Interestingly, there was one other player at Edgbaston without a bat sponsor – Australian No 11 Glenn McGrath – posing an interesting prospect for a double deal.
