There are three stumps at each each end leg, middle and off and they must conform to exact specifications stated in the laws of the game.
Each stump must be 28in from ground to top. The full width of all three stumps is 9in, evenly spaced, and the two bails sit in shaped grooves on top of the stumps. The portion of the stump above the playing surface should be cylindrical (apart from the domed top).

Stumps
There are two sets of stumps on the wicket, one at each end, and these days they can be painted in a variety of colours (see left) to accomodate day-night cricket.
Bails
The bails (right) must follow certain specifications so their overall length is no more than 10.95cm, with the length of the barrel limited to 5.40cm. The longer sprigot should measure 3.49cm and the shorter sprigot 2.06cm.
In order for a batsman to be out bowled, stumped, run out or hit wicket, at least one bail must be dislodged. If the weather conditions are particularly windy the umpires can call for specially heavy bails to prevent them from being blown off.
