THE ANALYST

W Wagon wheel - Wrong 'un

Wagon wheel – a batsman's scorechart, each spaghetti line superimposed on the outfield signifying the direction (and value) of a scoring shot. These reveal a batsman's strengths and favourite scoring avenues.

Walk – a batsman heading for the pavilion, without waiting for an umpire to give him out (usually after finely edging the ball). You're more likely to find a four-leaf clover than see a batsman walk in a Test match these days.

Wicket – not only a dismissal, and the collective word for the stumps, but often it also means the pitch, a use of 'wicket' purists don't like.

Work – to manoeuvre a straight ball through the legside by turning the blade inwards using a deft wrist action.

Wrist spin – spin that is mainly imparted by flexing the wrist rather than the fingers. Leg-spin falls into this bracket, although some off-spinners, notably the big-spinning Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan, do too.

Wrong 'un – another term for the googly, or any other ball that spins in an unexpected direction.
