U Uncovered pitches

Simon Hughes

Uncovered pitches – pitches used to be left open to the elements if play was suspended for rain, which, it is often argued, created a rich diversity of conditions (the sticky dog – a drying wicket – for instance). It is certainly true that English pitches are much more uniform now that they are completely covered at the first sign of a black cloud.
