Uncovered pitches pitches used to be left open to the elements if play was suspended for rain, which, it is often argued, created a rich diversity of conditions (the sticky dog a drying wicket for instance). It is certainly true that English pitches are much more uniform now that they are completely covered at the first sign of a black cloud.
