H - Half-volley - hook

Simon Hughes

Half-volley - a ball pitching close to the batsman that he can drive easily without risk of hitting the ball in the air.

Heavy ball - a delivery from a medium-paced bowler that is quicker than it looks, the ball hits the bat harder or higher than you'd expect.

Held up - a ball angling into the batsman, which moves slightly away off the pitch (see leg-cutter). It's Courtney Walsh's natural delivery.

Hole out - an attempted big hit that doesn't come off but ends up easily caught in the outfield.

Hook - a cross-batted shot to a ball rising above chest height, usually played by swivelling inside the line and helping the ball on its way. Copyright material reproduced under license from Macmillan Publishers Ltd. London, England
