Across the line - a shot with horizontal bat at right angles to the path of the delivery.
Agricultural - a hefty shot to the leg-side, sometimes called a 'cow stroke'.
Analysis - a bowler's statistics after a completed innings (or a day's play):
e.g. 12-2-36-2, relating to overs bowled, maidens, runs conceded, and wickets taken, always in that order.
Arm ball - a delivery from
a spinner that doesn't turn but goes straight on. You'll often hear a commentator say 'that one went on with the arm'.
Average - for a batsman this is the total number of runs scored divided by the total number of times he's been out (obviously excluding not outs). E.g. a batsman who has made 300 runs in 12 innings with 2 not outs, has an average of 30. Over 40 is considered a good Test-batting average.
For a bowler it is the number of runs conceded divided by wickets taken. So a bowler who has conceded 1000 runs and taken 40 wickets has an average of 25. Only the best achieve that.
Away-swing - a ball curving in the air away from the right-hand batsman, towards the slips, with the shiny side
to the right. (Also known as outswing.)
