The great fast bowling actions

Simon Hughes

The Great Actions

Watching the actions of different bowlers is fascinating because there is a bewildering variety of ways of getting the ball from A to B. Each one in this galaxy of stars has their own idiosyncratic style. However, they all have something in common (apart from at least 200 Test wickets each), their heads are all almost perfectly upright, eyes level, when they release the ball, which suggests balance is as important as brawn.

Dennis Lillee

Dennis Lillee shows menace, versatility and sheer pace from a classic side-on action.

Jeff Thomson

Jeff Thomson, with the spring of a young sapling, regularly slung balls at over 90mph.

Michael Holding

Michael Holding made the uprooting of stumps look effortless.

Malcolm Marshall

Malcolm Marhsall was quite slight but, charging to the wicket (chest-on), he generated great pace.

Imran Khan

Imran Khan's giant leap and explosive release was one of cricket's great sights.

Richard Hadlee

Richard Hadlee combined precision and merciless efficiency – he scalped 431 Test batsmen.

Courtney Walsh

Courtney Walsh is the master of disguise and the world's leading Test wicket-taker.
