Opening partners

Simon Hughes

Although they will be individualists, opening the batting is a partnership – there are two batsmen and it helps for them to have complementary styles. A right-handed and left-handed opening pair causes maximum disruption to the bowlers, making it hard for them to establish a rhythm. A solid defensive player, partnering a run-scorer, means the scoreboard keeps ticking over and the bowlers have to alter their tactics for each batsman. Opening batsmen may not be the most prolific run-makers but part of their job is to protect the run-makers in the middle order from the new ball.
