Clark has left Smallville and relocated to Metropolis, where he falls under the influence of Red Kryptonite and is soon involved in crime. An attempt is made to return Clark to his father – but he battles to stay on earth.
Lex’s new wife Helen returns to Smallville – but Lex has vanished, presumed dead. His dramatic return to town surprises everyone, especially Helen. Meanwhile, Clark’s back in town too and his relationship with Lana develops quickly, then ends abruptly.
Clark finds out more about his powers – that they are derived from the sun and solar flares can increase their strength or diminish them completely. He also finds a Kryptonite medallion that allows him to see into the past – while another power begins to emerge: super hearing.
Lex finds out some information about his own family’s past – but revealing these details leads him to an insane asylum and the possibility of having his memory erased by electro-shock therapy.
While Clark’s adopted father begins to act strangely, he believes his natural father could be behind it and attempts to confront him. He also learns something about his biological mother.
Everyone seems desperate to uncover Clark’s secret by any means necessary. Even the FBI get in on the action. As the series ends, a girl, claiming to be from Krypton, claims to hold the secret to Clark’s destiny – while someone he cares about deeply leaves Smallville.
