The series opens with Clark battling the tornadoes that have hit his home town of Smallville, using the superhuman powers he’s battling to control. During the season, Clark learns more about his origins and tries to come to terms with who he is and where he came from.
Clark develops a new ability – heat vision, which he slowly brings under his control. He also comes into contact with Red Kryptonite for the first time, which develops his dark side and causes him act aggressively and irrationally. But are Clark’s Kryptonite induced feelings showing his real nature?
Lex meets and marries a new girl in town, but she’s also been affected by the meteor storm which struck the town many years before and is not all she seems. Another mystery woman arrives and claims to be Clark’s mother, while Lana sets out to find her true, biological father.
The morphing Tina Greer returns to town under the guise of a former notable resident, and nearly kills Clark with Kryptonite. Clark also discovers some ancient alien writing on a cave wall that seems to shadow his own story. A new arrival, though a familiar face, teaches Clark his origins and his purpose on Earth.
The series ends with Clark destroying an important part of his past and banishing himself from town as a result. Meanwhile Lex has wed again, but his marriage is already in trouble – especially when his wife, and the pilot, vanishes during the flight to their honeymoon.
