The Evil Nemesis has done it again and rigged a bomb
to explode beneath the city. Fortunately, our hero Marshall
Claw is at hand to save the day. But wait! This time
the Evil Nemesis has really outdone herself. She’s
rigged the bomb to be triggered when a huge block of
ice melts and spills over the container it’s floating
in. Our gallant hero tries to use his superpowers to
lift the ice, but that fiendish felon has deliberately
used a 2-tonne block, which is too heavy even for Marshall
Claw’s superpowers. The clock is ticking, the
ice is melting and the water level is dangerously close
to the rim of the tank. What’s a superhero to
do?

As his trusty sidekick, can you help? What should our
hero do to avert a disaster?

Our hero doesn’t need to do anything. The Evil
Nemesis may be big but she’s not clever. A peculiarity
of water is that it expands instead of shrinks when
it solidifies, or freezes. And it just so happens that
the amount of water that an ice cube will displace when
floating is exactly the same as its liquid equivalent.
In other words, when the block of ice melts, the water
level in the tank will remain exactly the same. So the
bomb won’t be triggered.
