Were the terror attacks justified?
The actions of governments
and policymakers are increasingly influenced by their beliefs about
the causes of events. But their views don’t always match the
views of their constituents. In this survey we are giving you a
chance to have your views counted.
The government, the media and intelligence experts
have all rationalized their own theories about what caused the recent
terror attacks in London. But what do you think? Most of us would
agree that several factors were involved. We want to know how these
factors might relate to each other.
For example, imagine you were irritated by something
that happened at work and as a result you drowned your sorrows in
too much booze. Your drunkenness, in turn, annoyed your partner
and you ended up having a row with him or her.
What was the cause of the row with your partner? There
are clearly a whole chain of causes that lead to the disagreement,
beginning at your irritation at work, through getting drunk and
ending at your partners negative reaction.
We are interested in finding out how you see the chain
of causes that ended in the London terror attacks.
To do this we have taken a sample of often cited causes
of terror, and we want you to tell us how strongly these causes
might be linked. By analysing the pattern of your responses, we
can work out what the strongest links are and how you see the chain
of causes working.
The survey is completely anonymous; we have no way
of tracing anyone through their answers.
We have also asked you some questions about yourself,
and some questions that will reveal whether or not you feel politically
empowered, in control and justly treated. When you have finished
the survey we will give you feedback on how you scored on these
points.
We have found in the past that different people tend
to see causal links differently (men and women do, for example).
We are interested in looking at how your level of empowerment and
sense of control might influence your picture of the London bombings.
We expect to have received enough data by the
end of the year, so check back after that to see the results and
find out what the survey told us about how our attitudes and position
in society affects our perception of the causes of terror.
