Mingary Castle wreck

Introduction | Diver's log | History | More

Introduction

In the waters beneath Mingary Castle in the Sound of Mull lies a mystery wreck, discovered only a few years ago. Artefacts from the wreck suggest it may be over 300 years old. The Wreck Detectives set out to discover to whom this ship belonged and what it was doing there.

Without any surviving timber, the investigation is focusing on the scatter of artefacts on the site. The cannons were dated to 1640-70 and were identified as different to the ship's own arsenal. They were part of a cargo intended for land battle. The final answer came in a single line of a diary of a prisoner held in Mingary Caslte in 1644. He mentions a siege of the castle and he actually saw the wrecking of the ship, a Parliamentarian Dutch ship.
